It may already be February, but there’s still plenty of runway to make 2026 your strongest year yet. Over more than 40 years in the mortgage industry, I’ve used these six steps to meet my goals and help thousands of sales professionals improve their performance.
I invite you to think about a specific goal as you read these steps so you can try them on and see how they fit:
- Pay Attention to Your Intention: Why is this goal important to you? Knowing your intentions will ensure your actions align with your values. Knowing your “why” also keeps you focused and motivated when things get difficult.
- Have Drift Catchers: Our natural tendency is to drift. We set an intention — like eating healthier — and it doesn’t take long before we’re drifting away from it. We need people in our lives who tell us when we’re drifting and whom we respect enough to listen to without getting defensive.
- Be Teachable: Which people in your network have already achieved what you’re trying to accomplish? Learn from their experience and use podcasts, books and other resources to shorten your learning curve. Be willing to have a beginner’s mind to be open to learn all you can.
- Avoid Having Too Many Strategies: If everything is a priority, then nothing is. Too much change at once isn’t sustainable. Choose vital actions over trivial ones to concentrate on what’s essential for real progress.
- Let Go: This is a hard one. The formula for success often requires subtraction. What’s preventing you from doing the things that bring you closer to the goal? We tend to believe that everything we spend our time on is important, so letting go of those things can be painful, but necessary.
- Believe and Persist: Significant goals require believing you can achieve them and persisting when you want to quit. Belief isn’t certainty — doubts are normal with big goals. What matters is trusting that the goal is possible and staying committed, knowing each step moves you closer to the finish line.
Next, start building a timetable for your 2026 goals by joining my “Five Steps to Better Goal Setting and Planning” webinar on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 1 p.m. ET. It’s a complimentary session that will sharpen your planning skills with practical tools.
